Performing A Job Search During A Pandemic /blog/performing-a-job-search-during-a-pandemic/ /blog/performing-a-job-search-during-a-pandemic/#respond Wed, 22 Apr 2020 18:53:49 +0000 /blog/?p=7688 Continue reading ]]> Whether you’re an upcoming college grad seeking your first career or a displaced employee, locating a new job during a pandemic takes a different approach. There are a number of factors that can make your job search a little slower than normal however, there are ways to ensure that you hit the top of a hiring manager’s list. Let me share the inside scoop from the hiring side…

  • Make Search Algorithms Your Best Friend- More than 22 million Americans have lost their jobs in the last month. Unemployment rates are the highest that they’ve been in decades and the volume of incoming claims is overwhelming state unemployment agencies causing major delays in payments. Tell you something you don’t know, right? This means employers are being flooded with talent and are relying on technology more than ever to help them pin point their next hire. Your resume absolutely has to have the critical keywords that are relevant to the role you are seeking. Important keywords to consider are: any licenses or credentials you have, software programs you are fluent in, machinery or equipment that you have experience in and details of your typical responsibilities. Think of your resume as precious real estate and make the most use of the space. You can impart your soft skills during an interview but your core experiences must be marketed on the resume.
  • Check The Job Posting Date- Many employers were forced to send staff home immediately with stay at home orders. This means jobs that were posted for what were immediate openings, are now on hold yet may still be posted online. Be sure to sort listings by posted date and apply to the newest jobs first. Most job boards also allow you to sign up for email or text alerts when new jobs meeting your search criteria are posted. This is a great way to get your information in front of hiring managers right away.
  • Partner With A Recruiter- Many employers will be apprehensive to bring on full time employees until they are certain that their business can sustain it. In previous economic rebounds a large number of employers looked to staffing firms to help them bridge this time period and hired the employees in permanently once business was more stable. A recruiter typically only presents an employer with 3 or less candidates for consideration, drastically increasing your chance for hire in comparison to an employer evaluating hundreds of applicants.
  • Stay Fresh- Staying active and in your normal routine will absolutely increase your chances of interviewing and presenting as well as you did before this pandemic hit. Stay engaged with your industry through podcasts and online blogs. This will give you great ideas to bring to a new employer and give you some great topics for discussion during interviews. Be sure to be knowledgeable of how local and state pandemic restrictions may impact your future role and employer.

While certainly more difficult, it is absolutely feasible to land your next role during this pandemic. Many essential businesses are up-scaling their teams to meet the increase in business demand and are eager to find new talent for these roles.

The Trillium brand of companies is privately owned by René Poch and provides more than 30 years of industry leading recruitment and staffing services through its divisions including: Trillium Staffing, Trillium Construction Services, Trillium Driver Solutions, Trillium Technical, and Trillium Environmental. Speed Matters for All Lead Conversions! /blog/speed-matters-for-all-lead-conversions/ /blog/speed-matters-for-all-lead-conversions/#respond Tue, 05 Nov 2019 14:11:50 +0000 /blog/?p=7381 Continue reading ]]> In a job market that is at tight as it is now, it shouldn’t be a surprise that speed is the key to locking down a hire or an incoming lead. Competition for talent in almost every industry is at an all time high so making sure that your voice is heard first can be key to filling that position or landing that contract.

For salespeople and recruiters alike, speed and quick turn around times can be the difference between landing the sale and falling flat. In the sales and recruiting industries, every minute counts. Let’s look at this from the perspective of a client lead calling in asking for assistance in filling an order. Typically, when they are reaching out to an outside source, it is because the need is fairly urgent or they are being asked by upper management to gather information. In either scenario, by making sure they are a priority to you and your sales team will ensure that they do not turn to your competition. Everyone wants to feel like they are important and that their need or needs justify your attention.

For instance, according to a recent survey performed by Velocify, you have a 391% higher chance of a lead conversion by responding to an online inquiry or missed call within 1 minute. After that minute, the percentage drops to 120% and after an hour, it drops to only 36%. What this should tell you is that speed is the name of game here. Chances are that if you don’t respond in a timely manner, your competition absolutely will and you lose out on a sale. Do not give up! If at first you don’t reach the client, make sure to try again after an hour or so and maybe one more time that day. There is a fine line between being persistent and annoying so tread lightly. For more information regarding what may be deemed appropriate, check out the info-graphic created by Velocify.

Now let’s take a look from a prospective candidate or potential hires perspective. All of the same theories for lead conversions also ring true here. Let’s say you have found a solid candidate that could be a really good fit and you are eager to get them in front of your client. Once the initial contact is made, do not drop the ball. If the candidate is desirable by you and your client, they are most likely interviewing and talking with a number of other companies. If you wait even a few hours to reach out and make additional contact, it may be too late. At this point or really any point in the hiring process, speed with communication is key. Keep your candidates briefed on every aspect of the process and make sure you are being timely in your responses. Again, if you don’t, your competition will.

Whether your preferred method of contact is by phone, email or text; make sure you are making speed in your communications a priority. Everyone wants to feel like they are at top of mind and a quick response to any type of inquiry is the best way to instill this feeling.

Feeling Overwhelmed at Work? Try These Tips! /blog/feeling-overwhelmed-at-work-try-these-tips/ /blog/feeling-overwhelmed-at-work-try-these-tips/#respond Tue, 29 Oct 2019 13:14:09 +0000 /blog/?p=7393 Continue reading ]]> I think it is safe to say that all of us at some point in our career have felt overwhelmed while on the job. If this is the case for you and it feels like it happens more often than not, take a look at the tips below to try and help reduce your daily stress and ultimately reduce your feelings of being constantly overwhelmed.

First, you need to sit down and determine what one or two parts of your current role seem to be causing the most anxiety and stress. In other words, what tasks, if removed from your responsibilities, would help you feel less stressed out while at work. Once you have the main source of your anxiety pinpointed, determine if you can go at the project in a different way. If it is a large project, try and get it finished and off your plate. If the project has too many components and you are feeling overwhelmed in that regard, reach out your Supervisor or colleagues to see if they can lend a helping hand or ask if additional resources are feasible.

Try giving yourself a certain amount of time each day to work on specific tasks. By organizing your daily duties in a more efficient manner, this may allow you to focus on the more important and time sensitive projects first so you are not trying to do too much at once. In addition, if you feel like you are spending a large majority of your time putting out fires or helping to deal with small issues on your team, empower your team members to try and handle these issues on their own. Not all problems require escalation and the more you can limit these interruptions, the easier prioritizing your time will become.

Could part of your problem be that you are a perfectionist and that you feel your work is never up to your own standard? Surprisingly, this affects more people than you think, causing them to take longer on projects and sometimes even procrastinating just so they don’t have to handle the undue stress involved. For those of us that fall into this category, try asking yourself this question; “What is the true benefit of spending more time on this one specific project?” If the answer is not much or minimal, stop scrutinizing your own work and be done with it. Once you overcome the overwhelming need to perfect every project you are assigned, you can free yourself up to focus on more duties and tasks in a more timely manner.

Delegate, delegate, delegate. This tip cannot be stressed enough. If you have a team of colleagues that you are able to delegate tasks to, do not hesitate. Look at your currently assigned duties and determine what is truly the best use of your time. If you come across tasks that others on your team may have more time for and can handle, start assigning duties their way. It can sometimes be difficult to let go of certain tasks, especially if you have always been the one to do them, but by delegating these less than crucial duties, you will be surprised at how free you feel to focus on what is really important within your role. This can also empower your team and instill in them that they are truly an asset to you and your overall departmental goals.

A lot of the time, we can end up stressing ourselves out because we assume things regarding our role and assigned duties. For instance, you may have the assumption that if you can’t complete every single one of your task each day that you will be considered a failure and won’t be able to recover. Or if you turn down work, your colleagues may not see you as someone they can count on. While these concerns may be valid in some instances, in most cases, these type of worries just do not hold water. Try sitting down with your team and going over current workloads so everyone is aware of where they stand. By slowly debunking these assumptions overtime, you can reduce your stress and feeling of anxiety throughout the day.

Feeling overwhelmed while on the job is not a new concept but there are ways in which you can help to alleviate your own feelings of stress and anxiety while at work. By utilizing the tips above, you may be able to create a more well rounded workflow for not only yourself but your team as well.
