In fact, according to Bob Costello, Chief Economist for the American Trucking Association, “The increase in the driver shortage should be a warning to carriers, shippers and policymakers because if conditions don’t change substantively, our industry could be short just over 100,000 drivers in five years and 160,000 drivers in 2028.”

This continued decrease in drivers available could result in higher prices and even more frequently, out of stock items. For a consumer base that is becoming more reliant on in store pick-up and store to home deliveries from local stores, this problem may become more prevalent. Local, smaller companies will absolutely feel the burden of the shortage before your larger national chains but in the end, consumers who rely on trucking companies to get their goods from point A to point B, will be the ones the most affected. The fact of the matter is simple, less drivers available to transport the products we purchase on a daily basis, the less available those products will be and thus the higher the demand.

As I have mentioned before, all it not lost! The key to alleviating the driver shortage is change the societal view on what it means to be a Truck Driver. If we can get more people interested in a career in the transportation industry and change the stigma surrounding such jobs, we can help to try and fill the nearly 7.4 million job openings out there!

“For more than two decades, speeding has been involved in nearly one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. That is unacceptable, especially because it’s preventable. We will continue to educate the public on the dangers of speeding, and we will identify individuals who are speeding on our roadways and may issue citations as a deterrent to future speeding tendencies and to affect driver behavior,” stated Jay Thompson, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance President and Chief of Arkansas Highway Police.

In addition, according to 2015 stats gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 94% of all traffic crashes were in some way related to the actions of speeding drivers. In fact, during last year’s CVSA Safety Week nearly 17,000 passenger vehicles and 2,000 commercial vehicles were issued citations for speeding. Brian Fielkow, CEO of the Houston based trucking company Jetco Delivery, was one of 20 speakers who participated in this event in April of this year. Brian believes that in order to ensure trucking and logistics companies are handling the issue of distracted driving properly, there has to be a 3 way approach. Combating the problem lies with the individual offenders, the company itself and fellow peers and colleagues. By all 3 groups working together, companies can hope to instill a company culture where distracted driving is not acceptable in any way.

“It’s about holding yourself accountable, having a company that walks the walk and having team members hold themselves accountable,” Fielkow said. “No load is more important than the safety of the public.”

According to NTSB reports, almost 10% of all traffic fatalities in the US are caused by distracted driving such as glancing a cell-phone, or simply not paying attention to what is going on around them. The group found that the problem seems to be even more prevalent in Texas where in 2017, around 19% of all accidents involving motor vehicles involved distracted driving in some way. These accidents resulted in 444 deaths and over 3,000 injured. It is due to statistics like this that caused Texas to ban texting while driving in 2017, a trend that is becoming extremely widespread across the country.

While cracking down on distracted driving needs to be a team effort involving company officials, drivers and peers alike, ultimately, the choice to not be distracted while driving is on the individual driver. However, for truck drivers specifically, not using your cell phone while driving can be difficult in certain circumstances. For instance, many drivers rely on cellphones to give them information on available parking choices and hours of service issues. This can turn into a problem, especially if the driver is entering a new city or is using an unknown route.

What this all comes down to is distracted driving is perceived as being unacceptable for others to do, but not necessarily affecting individuals at the personal level. No one likes to see someone else driving while texted or eating a cheeseburger, but a large percentage of those same individuals have been known to similar tasks while driving their own vehicles. So why the disconnect? Why is it not acceptable for them but okay for me? Simply put, we all live with idea that we are able to handle multi-tasking while driving without an issue and something like an accident could never happen to us. This mentality needs to change! The implications of distracted driving need to be recognized at the personal level for all motorists, meaning that anyone who takes to the road should take responsibility for their own actions and remember that a small mistake on their end can completely change or even end the life of another. It doesn’t matter how good of a driver you think you are, if you’re distracted, you’re distracted. In addition, accountability at all levels of an organization is the first step to ensuring safer roadways for truck drivers and motorists alike.

Even with the advancement of self-driving cars and autonomous vehicles becoming all the rage, it is believed by many that no amount of technology can fully replace the reaction and thinking capabilities of a veteran Driver. Recently, this topic took center stage at the 2019 Mid-America Trucking Show. As reported by ttnews.com, the outstanding concern for many Truck Drivers in attendance was how quickly they would be replaced with “robot trucks.” However, to help in easing some of the concerns, the panelists, all mainly representatives of various tech companies within the automotive industry, answered questions directly on this topic.

“I can assure you that a young person going into trucking today will retire a truck driver, if he or she wants it,” said Robert Brown, director of public affairs for Tucson, Ariz.-based TuSimple. “The technology really, truly is amazing. I always tell people we can handle the freeways, but we can’t handle the infinite number of things that you all do on a daily basis.”

“I think like everyone else that as long as there are trucks, there are going to be truck drivers,” said Ognen Stojanovski, CEO of San Franciso-based Pronto, a company that makes driver-assist technologies. “But having great eyes and reaction times is not a substitute for having a great brain.”

The fact of the matter comes down to this, while technology in the trucking and automotive industry has broken through many barriers and has exceeded expectations in number of ways, it will not replace the human beings behind the wheel. Their intuition and experience is irreplaceable. Technology’s purpose in these industries to assist those Drivers and make their job easier and safer, not only for the Driver but for the other motorists on the roadways.

Unfortunately, we are starting to feel the wrath of a very real Driver shortage. According to USA Today and thehustle.co, the United States is currently experiencing a Driver shortage of 51,000 Drivers nationwide. This has resulted in a 6-10% increase in shipping costs. Guess who gets to pay the difference? That’s right, we do! In fact, with more and more Baby Boomers retiring every year and no one replacing them in the trucking industry, it is projected that by 2021, the US will be experienced a shortage of more than 100,000 Drivers.

In an effort to combat the shortage, shipping and logistics companies have had to increase wages by about 10% just in the last 18 months but are still struggling to fill seats. In fact, Tyson, the nation’s leading chicken distributor has stated that in order to offset a $200 million increase in shipping and distribution costs, consumers will begin to see increases in their products.

Even with investing more and more money into driverless trucks and other technologies in the coming years, it just won’t be enough to offset the increase cost in locating and retaining Driver talent. In addition, consumers will continue to become more reliant on e-commerce giants such as Amazon for their goods in lieu of visiting local stores. Unfortunately, in the end, the Driver shortage has and will continue to directly affect logistics and transportation companies, but also local businesses and the end consumer which includes you and me.
